Background Details
This year, we are proud to feature one of the unique offerings from the boutique Kivubelt group in western Rwanda. The coffee comes from smallholder farmers near Kivubelt's original estates, which include the Jarama Coffee Washing Station (Jarama CWS). After establishing their own coffee estates in Gihombo, Kivubelt acquired local washing stations to process coffee traditionally grown by smallholders in higher elevations. The result is a cup full of vibrant, fruity complexity known as "People's Farm" coffee—highlighting the collective effort of a close-knit, hard-working community.
Nestled in Rwanda’s Nyamasheke District, the region boasts a remarkable terroir, enriched by volcanic soils from the East African Rift and the consistent weather patterns provided by Lake Kivu and the Nyungwe Forest National Park. Coffees from this region are often fuller, jammy, and more layered than those grown elsewhere in Rwanda. The scenic landscape, with its steep terraced hillsides, is as striking as it is fertile, making the region ideal for coffee cultivation.
Kivubelt Coffee
Founded in 2011 by Furaha Umwizey, Kivubelt Coffee was created with the goal of being a sustainable, socially responsible coffee operation. After earning a master’s degree in economics in Switzerland, Umwizey returned to Rwanda to establish the company, starting with 200 acres of farmland in Gihombo. The company now employs over 400 people during harvest season and serves as a vocational school for local smallholders interested in improving their coffee farming techniques. Kivubelt currently operates 90,000 coffee trees and emphasizes local employment and empowerment.
"People’s Farm" Coffees
In addition to their estates, Kivubelt acquired two washing stations—Murundo CWS and Jarama CWS—servicing more than 500 smallholder farmers. Through Kivubelt’s quality premiums and training programs, smallholders are able to enhance their farming techniques, creating coffee that rivals large estate-grown varieties. The coffee processed at these washing stations is known as “People's Farm” coffee, reflecting the teamwork and collective spirit required to produce exceptional coffee.
