Background Details

This small but standout lot comes from the Mugaya Factory, located in the heart of Kenya’s celebrated Kirinyaga region. Established in 1975, Mugaya is part of the Mutira Farmer Cooperative Society and currently works with nearly 1,900 smallholder farmers. These producers cultivate traditional Kenyan coffee varietals—SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, and even some Blue Mountain—on small plots averaging less than one hectare in size. Together, they contribute to a meticulously washed and bed-dried AA-grade lot, rich in character and depth.

Kirinyaga’s cool climate, volcanic soil, and high elevation create ideal growing conditions for vibrant, fruit-forward coffees. This region is known for producing some of the most sought-after lots in Kenya, and Mugaya continues that legacy with this layered, juicy offering. The coffee expresses itself with a crisp acidity and smooth body, balancing bright blackberry and peach notes with a gentle brown sugar sweetness.

Mutira Farmer Cooperative Society

Mugaya’s farmers work together under a cooperative model that emphasizes quality, sustainability, and fair return. This shared effort results in coffee that’s not only delicious, but also rooted in community. Every step—from picking to processing—is done with care, and it shows in the clean, sparkling profile of this coffee.

Mugaya Factory

Each step of the process—from pulping to fermentation to drying—is handled with precision at the Mugaya Factory. Washed processing ensures clean, transparent flavors that showcase the varietals and terroir. The coffee is dried slowly on raised beds, allowing the sugars to develop evenly and enhancing sweetness in the final cup An elegant, fruit-forward Kenyan that highlights the best of the region’s coffee craftsmanship.
